C. UPDATES

Gold-Level Bicycle Friendly Community Award

The City of Alameda recently received the League of American Bicyclists’ Gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community Award. Of the 444 communities receiving awards this year, only 32 are at the gold level and 3 at the platinum level.

Alameda’s journey to this honor reflects a decade of steady progress, starting with a Bronze Award in 2016 and a Silver Award in 2021. Recent commitments that helped raise Alameda to gold include approving the Active Transportation Plan, advancing the Cross Alameda Trail to near completion, and launching the Oakland-Alameda Water Shuttle. Note that these initiatives, like all bicycle infrastructure projects in Alameda, include safety and/or access improvements for pedestrians as well as bicyclists.

Clement Avenue/Tilden Way Improvement Project

Construction is in Stage 1 of 5 stages. One southbound lane on Tilden Way is closed while the contractor focuses on constructing the extension of Clement Avenue from Broadway to Tilden Way.

The next stages are anticipated to begin in late March, pending weather, and will consist of removing the traffic signals at the Tilden/Fernside/Blanding intersection and constructing the roundabout medians and sidewalk. At that point, there will be a road closure on Fernside Boulevard approaching Tilden Way, with a detour in place. <http://www.alamedaca.gov/clementtilden>

Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle

Beginning March 10, just in time for the early March start of the Oakland Alameda Access Project (OAAP) construction, expanded weekend hours on Fri/Sat/Sun will return. This expanded service, along with the continuation of Tuesday service, will be fully paid for with an Alameda CTC grant for the 19 months of the OAAP construction period.

In January, the Water Shuttle carried 8,457 passengers and 2,329 bicycles. Compared to January 2025, the average daily ridership increased 7% overall. Service was down for the first week of the month for a combination of planned and unplanned maintenance. Since launching in July 2024, Woodstock has carried over 186,000 passengers and 42,000 bicycles.

Oakland Alameda Access Project

Caltrans and Alameda County Transportation Commission announced that Webster Tube construction will begin in March and will be completed with full closures on weeknights instead of an all-hours single-lane closure as originally planned. Posey Tube construction is likely to begin in 2027, and construction requirements will necessitate an all-hours single-lane closure in addition to full closures on a limited number of nights and weekends.

Caltrans’s project webpage includes a new, helpful video with an overview of work to come:
