Whereas, Alameda’s Sister City program provides opportunities for cultural exchanges and creating bonds between people from different cities around the world; and
Whereas, at the City of Alameda’s invitation, the Jiangyin, China Friendship Delegation visited and formalized its Sister City partnership on October 5, 2008 and are visiting here today; and
Whereas, since formalizing the Alameda-Jiangyin Sister City partnership, both cities have shared information about their arts, business, ecology, history, industry and sports, to deepen their understanding of each other’s culture; and
Whereas, in 2008, then Mayor Beverly Johnson, lead a delegation from Alameda to Jiangyin and in 2017, I, as Mayor, lead another delegation from Alameda to Jiangyin; and
Whereas, for years Alameda’s Jiangyin Sister City Committee has provided scholarships to a local Jiangyin school to support students and their families in emergency situations; and
Whereas, the erection of a Jiangyin-Alameda Sister City monument in Jiangyin is testimony to the importance of our relationship and symbolizes the strength of friendship between the two cities and Alameda’s recent delegation in 2017 visited this monument; and
Whereas, 2018 marks the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the Alameda-Jiangyin Sister City partnership, a show of strength, collaboration, connection and friendship that has lasted a decade and promises to be sustained for many years to come; and
Whereas, Alameda and Jiangyin have a tremendous opportunity to learn from one another about how to improve our communities, to create better cross-cultural understanding by continuing to get to know one another through person-to-person relationships which will be strengthened in our visit this October to celebrate in Jiangyin our 10th Anniversary as Sister Cities.
Now, therefore be it resolved, that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, hereby proclaim September 18, 2018 to be
Jiangyin, China Sister City Day
in the City of Alameda and encourage the residents of Alameda to welcome our visitors from Jiangyin and to celebrate the continued friendship and cultural exchange with our Sister City.
