Body

To: Honorable President Sarah Lewis and Members of the Social Service Human Relations Board

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This item is a regularly occurring agenda item to discuss Workgroup Reports for the Social Service Human Relations Board (SSHRB)

BACKGROUND

This item is a regularly occurring agenda item to discuss Workgroup Reports.

DISCUSSION

Currently, SSHRB has three workgroups:

The Domestic Violence Task Force (Furuichi Fong)

Human Relations/Alamedans Together Against Hate (Furuichi Fong/Yamashiro-Omi)

                     SSHRB Infrastructure (Lewis/Means)

The Infrastructure Workgroup has recently drafted the proposal below to revise the City’s annual Community Service Awards, which honors volunteer service to the community by individuals, businesses, and community organizations:

Timeframe: Spring or Fall (warm), during day, on a weekend

Logistics: Outdoors or a place where people can have indoor/outdoor space to cool off/sit down

Planning: Creation of an Ad Hoc Community Event Action Group

Budget: Solicit donations, in-kind donations from sponsors such as Kaiser, local business, or nonprofit organizations

o                     Possibly charge vendors and supply tables etc.

What: Have community vendors, businesses, etc. with booths to showcase their resources, community offers in specific categories

o                     Can have awards for specific categories, during the event - perhaps on a stage in the middle

o                     Programed live music / bands / speeches / presentations

o                     Use as opportunity to showcase results of Community Needs Assessment / People Listening sessions?

§                     Have on the spot focus groups / fill out survey / give feedback by answering a few quick questions on comment cards (if Fall)

o                     Use as opportunity to solicit feedback / stories for Unhoused Stories for Alameda Homeless Week?

The Infrastructure Workgroup’s recommendation is to do a revised event in Spring 2023 (late April or early May). Alternatives include:

Do revised proposal in Fall 2023, skip 2022

Do revised proposal, scaled down, in Fall 2022

Do virtual option or similar version as past in-person years in Fall 2022

This item is for discussion purposes only.

RECOMMENDATION

This item is for discussion purposes only. No action is needed.

Respectfully submitted,
