Title
Update from the Recreation and Parks Department on the Alameda Aquatic Center
Body
To: Honorable Chair and Members of the Public Art Commission
BACKGROUND
On December 16, 2024, Alameda Recreation and Parks Department staff presented to the Public Art Commission about the upcoming Alameda Aquatic Center at Jean Sweeney Open Space Park. The presentation provided an overview of the development, construction timeline, and the potential for the installation of Public Art.
At this meeting, the Alameda Aquatic Center was added to the site list for potential future physical public art and discussed as a site for future calls for Physical Public Art funded by the Public Art Program. Ultimately, the Alameda Aquatic Center was not selected by the Public Art Commission as the site for the next Physical Public Art call.
DISCUSSION
On September 30, 2025 Commissioner Lisa Martin requested an update on the Alameda Aquatic Center, particularly the latest project and construction schedule. At this meeting, Justin Long, Alameda Recreation and Parks Department Director will provide an update on the Alameda Aquatic Center.
The Alameda Aquatic Center will be situated on the North-West end of Jean Sweeney Open Space Park and will serve the City with multiple aquatic facilities. It will be nestled in the park between Atlantic Avenue and the Cross Alameda Trail. The construction timeline for the Aquatic Center has been refined, and additional architectural designs have been developed. With these updates, the PAC can better understand the development and how it could potentially engage with the Public Art Program in the future.
RECOMMENDATION
