Whereas, The Administration on Aging in Washington DC has adopted the theme "Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow" to promote the safety and well-being of older Americans; and
Whereas, Alameda is a community with 14,672 citizens age 60 and older as well as 11,311 citizens between the ages of 50 and 59; and
Whereas, the City of Alameda is committed to helping all individuals live longer, healthier lives, assisting all seniors to age gracefully and in their own home; and
Whereas, the older adults in Alameda have made countless contributions and sacrifices to ensure a better life for future generations; and
Whereas, the City recognizes the value of injury prevention and safety awareness in helping older adults remain healthy and active; and
Whereas, the community can provide opportunities to enrich the lives of seniors by publicly emphasizing the need to take action to safeguard against unintentional injuries; provide information on avoiding leading causes of injury for older adults such as falls, motor vehicle-related incidents, suffocation, medication overdose, fire, and burns; and helping older adults take control of their safety and well-being.
Now, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Marie L. Gilmore, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do herby proclaim May 2014 as Older Americans Month in the City of Alameda and urge every resident to take time to recognize older adults and the people who serve and support them as powerful and vital individuals who contribute greatly to the community.
