EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The City of Alameda's (City) annual Communications Report is a key project within the City's Strategic Plan. This report reviews the City's communication focus areas, tactics, and analytics last calendar year and outlines new strategies to enhance both internal and external communications.
BACKGROUND
The City's draft Communications Plan, project GOV11 in the City's 2023-2026 Strategic Plan, was reviewed with the City Council on June 4, 2024. The plan includes the following internal and external goals to enhance transparency and improve how information is shared.
Internal Goals
* Enhance communications, information accuracy, and transparency.
* Improve the sharing and dissemination of departmental updates and information.
External Goals
* Improve timeliness and delivery of City communication to residents and businesses with particular attention to impacted groups and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
* Enhance trust and transparency in local government, City departments, and projects.
* Increase reach and positive constructive engagement and trust from residents on primary social channels like Facebook as well as secondary channels like Instagram, Social Media private groups, and Nextdoor.
The City's Communication Plan organizes the City's communications into three main categories:
1. Crisis Communications: These are timely updates for critical situations like natural disasters, significant police activity, and public unrest. Last year, the City responded to crises including the December Tsunami Warning, an incident involving a former Councilmember, and the tragic murder of an Alameda family.
