Re: Adoption of Resolution to Authorize the Under Armour Logo and Stephen Curry Signature on the Leydecker Park Outdoor Basketball Court.

BACKGROUND

The Under Amour Give Back program, in partnership with Golden State Warriors player Stephen Curry, offered a collaboration with the City of Alameda to refurbish the public outdoor basketball court at Leydecker Park on Bay Farm Island.  Under Armour is a US based, sports clothing manufacturer that has created a corporate giving program to provide kids in underserved communities access to sports.  The proposal includes $100,000 to complete the work and host a community celebration in late June when the court will reopen.

The project provides much needed renovation for this lighted basketball court that is heavily used by the community.

DISCUSSION

The collaboration with Under Armour to rehabilitate the Leydecker Park basketball court includes striping an Under Armour logo and Stephen Curry signature onto the basketball court.  Examples are shown in Exhibit 1.  The NBA Fit logo shown on the sample will not be included on the Leydecker Park court.  The Alameda Recreation and Park Department (ARPD) logo may be included in the center.

Per the 2007 City Council authorized policy for naming City property, facilities and streets, this is project is allowable under the criteria for a name that recognizes the donor of a significant gift of funds for a City facility.

The Recreation and Park Commission heard a presentation on this donation and agreed that it is appropriate to include permanent striping of the Under Armour logo and Stephen Curry signature as a way to recognize their donation and improvement to Leydecker Park.  The Recreation and Park Commission will review and approve the final design as recommended by the Recreation and Park Director.

The rehabilitation of the Leydecker Park basketball court is part of a series of events including youth basketball clinics with Stephen Curry at St. Joseph's school and culminating with a celebration for the opening of the refurbished basketball court to which all community members and Alameda youth are invited.  Details will be publicized through ARPD.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

There is no financial impact resulting from authorizing an Under Armour logo and Stephen Curry signature to be striped on the Leydecker Park basketball court.  The court refurbishment project is fully funded and managed by Under Armour with no funding by the City.

MUNICIPAL CODE/POLICY DOCUMENT CROSS REFERENCE

This action has no effect on the Municipal Code.

ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW

The proposed project includes the rehabilitation and improvement of an existing park; the proposal is consistent with the zoning and general plan designation for the property; and the improvements will be subject to the existing design requirements of the Alameda Municipal Code ensuring compatibility with adjacent land uses. This action is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act ("CEQA") pursuant to Guidelines Sections 15301 (Repair, maintenance and/or minor alteration of an existing facility) and 15302 (replacement or reconstruction).
