Re-establishing an Economic Development Commission for the City of Alameda

Request that the City Council consider re-establishing an Economic

Development Commission for the City of Alameda in order to:

(a) Recommend policies and plans to the City Council for bringing businesses to Alameda and expand the City's commercial base
(b) To make recommendations that result in providing new jobs and jobs that replace those lost when the Navy left Alameda Point
(c) Research and provide recommendations to the City Council on funding City sponsored redevelopment projects in the absence of State Redevelopment (tax increment) funding
(d) Work with current businesses and business associations to retain and grow businesses in Alameda
(e) Provide ways to coordinate with regional efforts to grow the local economy and Alameda's business to business tax revenues
(f) Perform other economic development activities at the direction of the City Council
(g) Update Alameda's Economic Development Strategic Plan (on a periodic basis)

Justifications:

Job creation and business attraction/retention are essential to the economic stability of the City.

Providing public discussion of development strategies to a Commission accountable to the City Council establishes a public process for recommendations used to set policies driving Alameda's development while respecting residents' needs.
