WHEREAS, April 22, 2015 marks the 45th anniversary of the first celebrated Earth Day; and

WHEREAS, Earth Day focuses on the need to protect the beauty and fragility of our planet, and to provide public education in its stewardship; and

WHEREAS, our future depends on the education of our youth and on their understanding of the need to protect our planet as they become the leaders of tomorrow; and

WHEREAS, all people, regardless of race, gender, income, or geography, have a moral right to a healthy, sustainable environment; and

WHEREAS, it is understood that the citizens of the global community must step forward and take action to create a green economy to combat the aforementioned global challenges; and

WHEREAS, a sustainable environment can be achieved on the individual level through educational efforts, public policy, and consumer activism campaigns; and

WHEREAS, it is necessary to broaden and diversify this global movement to achieve maximum success; and

WHEREAS, the City of Alameda hereby encourages its residents, businesses, and institutions to use Earth Day to celebrate the Earth and commit to building a sustainable environment, and green economy; and

WHEREAS, the City's Public Works Department, Recreation & Parks Department, Alameda Municipal Power, Alameda County Industries, and the East Bay Regional Park District are jointly sponsoring the Earth Day Festival on April 25, 2015, at Washington Park.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim April 25, 2015 as Earth Day in the City of Alameda and encourage all Alameda residents, businesses, civic groups, government agencies, and other organizations to participate in local and regional celebratory and educational activities so as to make Alameda a better place to live.
