Proclamation Declaring May 11 through May 16, 2015 as Salvation Army Week.

Whereas, the year 2015 marks the 150th year of The Salvation Army and the 95th year of The Salvation Army Oakland Garden Center Corps, which has touched many lives in the City of Alameda and the surrounding communities; and

Whereas, during National Salvation Army Week, we thank those who contribute to The Salvation Army's mission, whether through time, money, or in-kind assistance, and we invite others to support The Salvation Army to help people in need locally, nationally, and globally; and

Whereas, The Salvation Army is synonymous with helping people and has been doing so since its founding by William and Catherine Booth in 1865; and

Whereas, The Salvation Army Oakland Garden Center Corps was established in 1920; and

Whereas, Corps officers, volunteers, and community partners work tirelessly to create a destination for men, women and families where they can receive the resources they need to begin their journey towards self-sufficiency; and

Whereas, today, The Salvation Army's services are stronger than ever with programs that address some of the most pressing social needs and serve more than 30 million people through almost 7,600 operational centers in nearly every United States zip code - about one person every second; and

Whereas, true to its philosophy and priority, The Salvation Army continues the dual mission of spiritual ministration and of helping people with the basic necessities of food, clothing, shelter, friendship and love, regardless of religious affiliation; and

Whereas, our community depends on The Salvation Army and because it is not a government agency, The Salvation Army depends on public support to continue its humanitarian work, which is especially important in these challenging economic times, which impact The Salvation Army and many people in our community, across the nation and the world; and

Whereas, The Salvation Army Oakland Garden Center Corps has earned the support and confidence of the people of Alameda and neighboring communities by their timely, dedicated and cost-effective services.

Now, therefore be it resolved, that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim May 11-16, 2015 as National Salvation Army Week in the City of Alameda and encourage all residents to join me in recognizing the efforts of this organization.
