REQUEST FOR SSHRB TO CONDUCT THE SECOND ANNUAL CITY OF ALAMEDA COMMUNITY SERVICES AWARDS RECOGNIZING AND HONORING INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS FOR THEIR SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY

Body

Prior to 2009, annual events were held to recognize and honor the work of outstanding volunteers and organizations in our community. The most recent event of this type was the Alameda Red Cross "Heroes Breakfast". Awards presented at this event included Citizen of the Year, Community Service Individual of the Year, and Community Service Organization of the Year. As a result of a recent discussion with executive directors of local non-profit organizations, President Biggs is requesting that the Board consider sponsoring an annual event reinstituting this practice of recognizing outstanding contributions to our community.

At its meeting of July 18, 2014, the Board voted to develop and implement a process to identify outstanding volunteers and honor them for their service to the community at the 2nd Annual Everything Alameda event on September 27, 2014. The committee, formed to undertake the City of Alameda Community Service Awards (CSA) project, developed nomination forms, and recruited elected officials and other members of the community to act as judges. Seven individuals and one non-profit organization were chosen to be recognized. The awards were presented at 2nd Annual Everything Alameda event, and additional recognition was given to the eight awardees at the October 21, 2014 meeting of the City Council.

The CSA Committee held a follow-up meeting, at which time they decided to ask the Board to consider undertake conducting the CSA as an annual project.

RECOMMENDATION:  It is recommended that the Board discuss the request from the CSA Committee, and undertake the City of Alameda Community Service Awards as an annual project of the Board.
