Discussion Regarding Staff Request For SSHRB, CDI, And ARPD Senior Services To Work In Partnership On Issues Of Mutual Interest

Body

INFORMATION item with a suggested time limit of 20 minutes

The Interim City Manager invited City staff, including the secretaries of SSHRB, Commission on Disability Issues (CDI), the ARPD Senior Services Manager, and the SSHRB and CDI Presidents, to a meeting to discuss how CDI and SSHRB might work together to better serve and support Alamedans with disability and mobility issues. The ARPD Senior services Manager was included in the discussion, as these disability and mobility issues are also experienced by aging individuals.
Merging SSHRB and CDI or creating a liaison relationship between them were two options on the agenda for discussion.
The CDI advises the Mayor and City Council, department directors, and other boards and commissions on issues pertaining to the disability community in the City of Alameda. The commission addresses a broad range of issues affecting the lives of people with disabilities and advises city officials on actions they can take to achieve an environment in which people with disabilities have equal access to programs, housing, facilities and services. To support the integration and participation of persons with disabilities, the CDI works to foster attitudes and promote behaviors that respect and value people with disabilities throughout the community.
The Social Service Human Relations Board Summary of Charter and Ordinance Authority (ATTACHMENT 1) shows the similarities of purpose SSHRB shares with CDI. Over the past two years, the Board has also added the need for senior services as a priority in helping Alameda maintain a safety-net of services in our community.
President Biggs will share information regarding the meeting convened by the Interim City Manager, and lead a discussion of how SSHRB, CDI, and ARPD Senior Services might work more closely together.
