Proclamation Declaring November 1, 2015 as Extra Mile Day in the City of Alameda

Body

Whereas, Alameda is a city which acknowledges that a special vibrancy exists within the entire community when its individual citizens collectively “go the extra mile” in personal effort, volunteerism, and service; and

Whereas, Alameda is a city which chooses to acknowledge and celebrate individuals and organizations within our community who give of themselves wholeheartedly and with commitment in support of programs, services, and activities that help make Alameda a better place in which to live; and

Whereas, this year, the Social Service Human Relations Board held its second annual City of Alameda Community Service Awards program, recognizing Ginny Krutilek, Audrey Lord-Hausman, Vickie Smith, Marian Williams, Deanna Chu, Julian Aguilar, Alameda Family Services, and the late Niel Tam, for their extraordinary dedication and service to our community; and

Whereas, Alameda acknowledges the mission of Extra Mile America, which is to create 500 Extra Mile Cities in America, and is proud to support “Extra Mile Day” on November 1, 2015; and

Whereas, in the spirit of “Extra Mile Day,” the City of Alameda also recognizes the exemplary partnership between Bay Ship and & Yacht and the College of Alameda in forming the Working Waterfront Cohort, an innovative maritime vocational training program that provides a path to succeed in high skill, high wage, and high demand jobs and, going the extra step, encourages U.S. military veterans, formerly homeless, and people on probation to enroll in the program. Whereas the City encourages other businesses to follow Bay Ship and Yacht’s lead to partner with College of Alameda on innovative training programs for its residents.

Now, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim November 1, 2015 as Extra Mile Day in the City of Alameda and encourage each individual in the community to take time on this day to “go the extra mile” in their own life, and to acknowledge all those who are inspirational in their efforts and commitment to make our community a better place.
