Proclamation Declaring May 12, 2016 as Bike to Work and School Day. (Public Works 310)

Body

WHEREAS, the City of Alameda encourages residents to bike to work and school; and
WHEREAS, bicycling to work and to school reduces traffic congestion, improves air quality, promotes healthy lifestyles, and decreases fuel consumption; and
WHEREAS, Bike-to-Work and Bike-to-School days have proved effective in converting drivers to bicyclists, and educating residents about the environmental and health benefits of biking to work and to school; and
WHEREAS, Bike Walk Alameda, in partnership with the City, the Alameda Unified School District and the Alameda County Safe Routes to School Program, has created and organized events to promote the safe use of bicycles and to assist in making the City of Alameda a bike-friendly City; and
WHEREAS, Bike-to-Work Day in Alameda builds on the annual Bay Area-wide event that has activities, promotions, and advertising throughout the region; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda, joined by other cities and counties in the Bay Area, is celebrating Thursday, May 12, 2016, as Bike-to-Work Day and Bike-to-School Day 2016.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim Thursday, May 12, as
ALAMEDA BIKE-TO-WORK DAY, 2016
ALAMEDA BIKE-TO-SCHOOL DAY, 2016
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that I commend Bike Walk Alameda for its partnership with the City and encourage all of our residents to join with the City of Alameda Public Works Department, Alameda Unified School District, Alameda County Safe Routes to School Program, the Alameda/Oakland Ferry Service, the Alameda Harbor Bay Ferry Service, Kaiser Permanente, and local volunteers and businesses in supporting the City of Alameda's Bike-to-Work Day and Bike-to-School Day; and invite all Alameda residents, businesses, civic groups, government agencies, and other organizations to participate in local and regional celebrato...
