Proclamation Declaring October 2 through 8, 2016 as Public Power Week. (Alameda Municipal Power)

Whereas, we, the residents of the City of Alameda, highly value local control of community services and, therefore, have chosen to operate a community-owned, locally controlled, non-profit electric utility and, as consumers and owners of the electric utility, have a direct say in utility operations and policies; and

Whereas, Alameda Municipal Power provides homes, businesses, and local government agencies with reliable, efficient, cost-effective, and green electricity, and its local operation and workforce continue to make our community a better place in which to live and work; and

Whereas, in recognition of Public Power Week, October 2 through 8, 2016, Alameda Municipal Power will host a special "Shop Clean & Local" week to celebrate businesses participating in its Alameda Green renewable power program; and

Whereas, Alameda Municipal Power is a valuable community asset that contributes substantially to the well-being of residents through energy efficiency, customer service, environmental protection, economic development, and safety awareness; and

Whereas, Alameda Municipal Power is a dependable and trustworthy institution whose lower rates translate into significant savings for Alamedans, while directly contributing to the City of Alameda's economic well-being and quality of life with annual transfers of over $2 million.

Now, therefore, be it resolved, that Alameda Municipal Power will continue to work to bring lower-cost, safe, reliable electricity to our homes and businesses, as it has since 1887, the year the utility was created to serve Alamedans; and

Be it further resolved, that our community joins hands with more than 2,000 other public power systems in the United States in this celebration of public power and recognition that Alameda Municipal Power is good for consumers, business, the City of Alameda, and our nation; and
