SEASON FOR NONVIOLENCE DAILY READING

Body

Background

A Season for Nonviolence (SNV) began in 1998, as a grassroots campaign inspired by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The purpose of this international educational and media campaign is to focus attention on the philosophy of attaining peace through nonviolent action, as demonstrated by Gandhi and Dr. King. Now it is called the Gandhi-King-Chavez Season for Nonviolence and honors the work and legacy of Cesar Chavez, as well.

Nonviolent principles and practices are a powerful way to heal, transform and empower our lives and communities. Recently, new models for reconciliation and human harmony have clearly demonstrated that all of us can help to move the world in the direction of peace through our daily nonviolent choices and actions.

During the Season for Nonviolence, which runs from January 30 to April 4, our schools are encouraged to start the morning with the SNV Daily Reading, which includes a way of living peacefully. Our City Council and School Board also begin their meetings with the SNV Daily Reading.

Today’s Season for Nonviolence way of living peacefully is: Service.

Being helpful to others without seeking anything in return is a gift - to the recipient and to you.

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”
