Whereas, April 22, 2017 marks the 47th anniversary of the first celebrated Earth Day, a day in which events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection; and

Whereas, Earth Day focuses on the need to protect the beauty and fragility of our planet, and to provide public education on its stewardship; and

Whereas, it is important that youth understand the need to protect our planet as they become the leaders of tomorrow; and

Whereas, all people have a moral right to a healthy, sustainable environment, and more than 110 countries recognize their citizens' right to a healthy environment; and

Whereas, it is understood that the global community must step forward and take action to create environmental protections and a green economy; and

Whereas, a broad and diverse global movement is necessary to achieve maximum success; and

Whereas, the City of Alameda and our residents, organizations, and businesses have shown committed leadership, as expressed through the goals of the General Plan, Climate Action Plan, Zero Waste Plan, ordinances and policies, to a sustainable environment and green economy; and

Whereas, the City's Public Works Department and Recreation & Parks Department, Alameda Free Library, Alameda Municipal Power, Alameda Police Department, Alameda Fire Department, Alameda County Industries, Community Action for a Sustainable Alameda (CASA), and the East Bay Regional Parks District jointly sponsor Alameda's Earth Day Festival, on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Upper Washington Park, and invite all residents to attend.

Now, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, do hereby proclaim April 22, 2017 as
