Re: Recommendation to Authorize the Warriors, Good Tidings Foundation, Aquafina, and Alameda Theatre and Cineplex Logos on the Washington Park Outdoor Basketball Courts.

BACKGROUND

The two outdoor basketball courts at Washington Park were recently chosen for a renovation project through the Warriors Community Foundation.  This project is fully funded by a collaboration of the Warriors Community Foundation with Aquafina as their corporate partner and the Good Tidings Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization that builds and renovates youth athletic facilities in low-income areas.  The Alameda Theatre and Cineplex initiated this project when it took donations for the Warriors Community Foundation during its showing of the 2016 NBA Finals and subsequently worked with the Warriors Community Foundation and Alameda Recreation and Parks Department to ensure that these donations remained in the city of Alameda.

All work is done in-kind and managed by the Good Tidings Foundation, which directly contracts the work.  The value of this renovation project is $90,000.  The work includes demolition of the existing asphalt and basketball posts; resurfacing the asphalt with a 2” overlay and new redwood header board; applying acrylic surfacing and sealant to the new courts; and installing four NBA Plexiglas hoop systems.

DISCUSSION

The Washington Park Basketball Court renovation project provides a much needed overhaul for this basketball court that is heavily used by the community.  All expenses are paid directly by the Good Tidings Foundation with no funding required by the city.

The only requirement of this funding is to stripe logs on the court to recognize the donations and efforts of the organizations and companies that are participating.  This includes a Warriors logo in center court and smaller Aquafina logo, Good Tidings Foundation logo and Alameda Theatre and Cineplex logo on the side of each court (Exhibit 1).

Per the 2007 City Council authorized policy for naming City property, facilities and streets, this is logos for this project are allowable under the criteria for a name that recognizes the donor of a significant gift of funds for a City facility.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

There is no financial impact resulting from authorizing the Warriors, Good Tidings Foundation and Aquafina logos striping plan of the Washington Park basketball courts.  The court refurbishment project is fully funded and managed by Good Tidings Foundation with funding from Aquafina and the Warriors and no funding required by the City.

RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation to Authorize the Warriors, Good Tidings Foundation, Aquafina, and Alameda Theatre and Cineplex logos on the Washington Park outdoor basketball courts.

Respectfully submitted,

Amy Wooldridge, Recreation and Parks Director
