Proclamation
Whereas, the USS Kennebec was originally built as the USS Corsicana for the Socony Oil Company and then was purchased by the Navy in 1942 and renamed the USS Kennebec AO-36. The Kennebec was the first of a T-2 type class oiler and the class was named after her; and
Whereas, She saw duty in WWII (in which she was awarded one Battle Star), Korea, and Vietnam (in which she was awarded seven Campaign Stars); and
Whereas, after being recommissioned December 16, 1961, the Kennebec was home-ported at Hunters Point in San Francisco, but She did replenished most of the carriers and escort vessels that were home ported in Alameda during the Vietnam War; and
Whereas, She was decommissioned at Mare Island, for the 4th time, on June 29, 1970, and sold for scrap in 1982; and
Whereas, in 2000, 30 years after being decommissioned, several shipmates started a USS Kennebec Association and with the help of the internet, were able to locate many of the shipmates who served aboard the Kennebec during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, and commenced to have yearly reunions; and
Whereas, the 2017 reunion will be held in Alameda during Fleetweek which will include a cruise on the USS Jeremiah O’Brien to watch the Blue Angels’ air show from the Bay; and
Whereas, with the help of the K-Chicks, The Ladies Auxiliary, and The Kennebec Association, a celebration will be held on October 6, 2017, at the Alameda Museum from 1:30 - 4:00 pm.
Now, therefore be it resolved that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim October 6, 2017 as
USS Kennebec Day
and would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere and grateful appreciation for the dedicated service provided by all members of the United States Military, and for the selfless and brave service they provided to all citizens so that we may live with the freedoms provided by this great Country.
