Whereas, one of our most important responsibilities is to ensure that our citizens are healthy; and
Whereas, while there are many dangers we must be cautious of, lead poisoning poses a threat to our residents of all ages, and especially to children under the age of six and those with developmental disabilities. It is vital that we take the necessary steps to make sure that we have a safe environment in the City of Alameda; and
Whereas, lead poisoning can have devastating effects on a person, ranging from delayed growth to learning disabilities, cognitive and behavior disorders, and even death. Even more alarming, lead poisoning tends to have little or no early visible symptoms and often goes undetected; and
Whereas, lead is commonly found in old paint, soil and water, and the only way to diagnose poisoning is through a blood test. If you believe that your child has lead poisoning, it is crucial to contact their health care provider immediately.
Now, therefore be it resolved, that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim October 22-28, 2017 as
Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Week
in the City of Alameda and I encourage all Alameda residents to learn about the dangers that lead poisoning presents and how to best prevent them in your family.
