Body

Proclamation

Whereas, Nick Pereira was born on June 2, 1939 in Merced, California. His family later moved to Berkeley and he attended Berkeley High School, graduating in 1957; and

Whereas, Nick attended the University of Oregon for two years before returning to the Bay Area to complete his college degree at San Francisco State University; upon graduation he joined the United States Marine Corps and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant; and

Whereas, Nick served 25 years in the United States Marine Corps, including two 13-month tours of duty in Vietnam, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel; and

Whereas, Nick’s military honors include being awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Legion of Merit Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal; and

Whereas, after retiring from the Marine Corps, Nick worked for Chabot/Los Positas College as Director of Maintenance and Operations for 15 years and received the Chancellor’s Award for Administrators; and

Whereas, Nick joined Alameda Elks Lodge No. 1015 on September 23, 2002 and immediately became active in programs supporting veterans and active-duty members of the Armed Services. He chaired the Veterans Committee for the last eight years, overseeing programs including the annual Veterans Day Dinner, Overseas Package Program, and Alameda’s Memorial Day Ceremony; organizing visits to the Veterans Home of California in Yountville and providing gifts for the residents, and accompanying veterans on “Honor Flights” to Washington, DC, to tour the World War II and Vietnam War Memorials; and

Whereas, when Nick returned from Vietnam, it was to a deeply divided country, where those who fought and died were not treated with respect or dignity. The pain this caused instilled in Nick a personal value, to ensure that every person who serves our country is honored.  The passion he feels toward our veterans and active-duty service members is what continues to drive him down the road of service which allows him to contribute to all of these efforts; and

Whereas, Nick and his high school sweetheart, Cece, have been married for 53 years and are the proud parents of two sons and three grandchildren. We are grateful for all of Nick’s service to our community, especially our veterans and active-duty service members, and wish Nick and Cece many happy years as they relocate to Southern California to be closer to their family.

Now, therefore be it resolved, that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim December 19, 2017 as

Nick Pereira Day

in the City of Alameda and call on all residents to join me in recognizing Nick’s significant contribution to our community, especially our veterans and active-duty service members.
