Whereas, women have bravely served our country, selflessly fighting for our liberties, informally since the American Revolution and formally since 1901 in the Army Nurse Corps; and

Whereas, many have been wounded and some have paid the ultimate sacrifice. 359 women were killed in World War I, 543 were killed in World War II, two in the Korean War, eight in the Vietnam War, 15 in the Persian Gulf War, 44 in Afghanistan, and 110 in Iraq; and

Whereas, 1,500 women served in the Spanish-American War (1898-1902), 36,000 in World War I (1917-1918), 400,000 in World War II (1940-1947), 50,000 in the Korean War (1950-1955), 265,000 in the Vietnam Era (1964-1975), 374,000 women Pre-9/11, including the Persian Gulf War (1990-2001), and over 700,000 who served Post-9/11 including in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom; and

Whereas, notably, in 1992, just over 15 years ago, women were first allowed to fly combat aircraft and in 1994 women first served on combat ships in the Navy, thus allowing women to be considered for top positions in the Navy. During Operation Desert Fox in Iraq in 1998, U.S. women aviators first flew combat aircraft on a combat mission and in 2011, women officers first served onboard submarines; and

Whereas, in 2014, there were 200,692 women in the Active component of the U.S. Armed Forces, proudly serving as Airmen, Coast Guardsmen, Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers, and 156,180 women in the Reserve and National Guard, representing 16.5% of the total military force; and

Whereas, in 2015, women made up 9.4% of the veteran population, with an expected increase to 16.3% by the year 2042 and are the fastest growing group within the veteran population, doubling their numbers in the past 30 years; and
