Whereas, over thirty countries worldwide have holidays celebrating trees; and

Whereas, in the United States, Arbor Day was founded in 1872 and is celebrated to encourage Americans to maintain and replenish our country's vast forests, orchards, and woodlands. National Arbor Day is on the last Friday in April; however, many states observe Arbor Day on a different day when it is the best time to plant trees in their state; and

Whereas, in California, Arbor Week, which was celebrated this year from March 7-14, is in honor of the late Luther Burbank's birthday, a California horticulturalist whose life's labor produced hundreds of plants and trees that have contributed to the natural splendor and food production in our state; and

Whereas, the City of Alameda is improving our community by planting trees and working to improve the quality of life in Alameda; and

Whereas, trees are a valuable economic asset in our city that help maintain or increase property values and attract new businesses and residents; and

Whereas, trees play an important role in energy conservation by moderating temperature extremes with shade and humidity; and are important in reducing the amount of energy consumed in heating and cooling buildings and homes; and

Whereas, trees planted in urban areas play a significant role in meeting California's greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets by sequestering carbon, i.e., converting and storing carbon dioxide; and

Whereas, trees provide essential habitat for much of California's wildlife, including many listed, threatened, and endangered species; and

Whereas, the City of Alameda will celebrate Arbor Week from April 22-27, 2018, and will sponsor a Celebrate Trees Day on Friday, April 27, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., in the parking strip in front of Paden Elementary School at 444 Central Avenue.
