Proclamation Declaring April 22, 2018 as Earth Day.  (City Manager 2110)

Body

Proclamation

Whereas, April 22, 2018, marks the 48th anniversary of the first celebrated Earth Day, a day in which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection;  this year’s theme is End Plastic Pollution; and

Whereas, plastic pollution is having negative health, environmental, and economic impacts on every community around the world, from clogging waterways to harming wildlife to contaminating our drinking water; and

Whereas, the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. The passage of the landmark Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, and many other groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed. Now, more than one billion people, from over 192 countries, participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest civic observance in the world; and

Whereas, our future depends on the education of our youth and on their understanding of the need to protect our planet as they become the leaders of tomorrow; and

Whereas, the City of Alameda and our residents, organizations, and businesses have shown committed leadership, as expressed through the goals of the General Plan, Climate Action Plan, Transportation Choices Plan, Zero Waste Plan, ordinances and policies, to a sustainable environment and green economy; and

Whereas, in addition, the Alameda Municipal Power’s energy efficiency program received national honors in the 2017 Mayors’ Climate Protection Awards; and

Whereas, the City’s Public Works Department, Recreation & Parks Department, Alameda Free Library, Alameda Municipal Power, Alameda Police Department, Alameda Fire Department, Alameda County Industries, Community Action for a Sustainable Alameda, and the East Bay Regional Parks District jointly sponsor Alameda’s Earth Day Festival, on Saturday, April 21, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Upper Washington Park, and invite all residents to attend.  This year’s theme is It’s Your Planet, What’s Your Plan?

Now, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, do hereby proclaim April 21, 2018 as

Earth Day Alameda 2018

and encourage all Alameda residents, businesses, civic groups, government agencies, and other organizations to participate in Earth Day celebratory and educational activities.
