Whereas, the City of Alameda encourages residents to ride their bicycles to work and school when possible; and
Whereas, bicycling to work promotes good health, improves air quality, reduces traffic congestion, and decreases fuel consumption; and
Whereas, Bike to Work and Bike to School days have been shown to be effective in increasing the number of people bicycling, and in educating residents about the health benefits of bicycling for individuals and the environment; and
Whereas, Alameda County Safe Routes to School Program, Alameda Kiwanis Club, Alameda Recreation and Parks Department, Alameda Unified School District, Bike Walk Alameda, and Kaiser Permanente have created and organized events on and around this day to promote safe bicycling; and
Whereas, in support of bicycling to school, the Alameda Bike Festival and Rodeo will take place on Saturday, May 12, 2018, with free family friendly educational activities, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Ruby Bridges Elementary School; and
Whereas, Bike to Work Day in Alameda builds on the annual Bay Area wide event that has activities throughout the region.
Now, therefore be it resolved, that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim Thursday, May 10, 2018 as
Alameda Bike to Work & School Day
and invite all Alameda residents, businesses, civic groups, government agencies, and other organizations to participate in celebratory and educational activities.
