Proclamation

Whereas,                      quality affordable housing is vital to healthy, safe, vibrant, and diverse communities; and

Whereas,                      rising housing costs have led longtime residents to be displaced, live in overcrowded and substandard homes, or become homeless, threatening our region’s diversity and economic prosperity; and

Whereas,                      creating new affordable homes and preserving and improving existing housing helps residents maintain community roots and encourages social and economic diversity for generations; and

Whereas,                      affordable homes close to public transit and jobs provide low income families better access to opportunities and amenities and reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and

Whereas,                      non-profit organizations, local jurisdictions, community organizations, faith-based groups, and many others continue to build inclusive communities by providing shelter, homes and support for low-income people and those with special needs; and

Whereas,                      local jurisdictions such as the City of Alameda, play an important role by raising local resources for affordable housing to leverage federal, state and other funds; and

Whereas,                      last year the Legislature passed and Governor Brown signed SB 3 (Beall), which placed the four billion dollar Veterans and Affordable Housing Bond Act on the November 6, 2018 general election ballot; and

Whereas,                      the Veterans and Affordable Housing Bond Act will provide funding to support multifamily housing, first-time home buyer assistance, and veteran home loans; and

Whereas,                      East Bay Housing Organizations has organized Affordable Housing Week for 22 years and will feature 15 events acknowledging the need for and benefits of affordable housing.

Now therefore be it resolved, that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, hereby proclaim May 10 - 20th, 2018 as the

22nd Annual Affordable Housing Week

in the City of Alameda and encourage residents to participate in those activities and support the Veterans and Affordable Housing Bond Act on the November 6, 2018 ballot.
