At the City Council meeting of February 6, 2018, Police Chief Rolleri presented historical data of crimes (Item 6-B) and recommended the purchase of additional license plate readers (Item 6-C) to be placed at the places of ingress/egress to and from the City of Alameda (i.e., the bridges and Tubes).

The cumulative crime data for across the City included:

The 2017 data on robberies should be broken down by month and sector and 2018 data for all categories should be provided.

Since then, there have been several serious incidents, one of which resulted in a homicide.  It is critical that Council give direction to staff to prioritize efforts to increase safety and reduce crime and develop strategies working with our community, including our businesses.  Such efforts should be based upon the Chief’s professional expertise, which may include filling Police Officer vacancies, increasing foot patrol and additional license plate readers, as well as other community based strategies.  Time is of the essence.
