Whereas, the City of Alameda and its surrounding waters are renowned as a location for water sports and Alameda is one of the premier Bay Area boating centers; and
Whereas, outdoor recreation and particularly water sports, contribute to the health and well-being of the population as seen in two Alameda programs that teach children water safety and sailing, both in partnership with the Alameda Recreation and Parks Department. The Encinal Yacht Club Junior Program teaches children how to sail and be safe on the water while the Alameda Community Sailing Center offers a wide range of sailing programs and lessons to children and adults; and
Whereas, water sports are a vital component of Alameda's economic development as it attracts citizens as well as visitors from throughout the Bay Area; and
Whereas, water sports are a significant source of revenue for local businesses and contribute to the City's economy through sailing clubs, yacht brokers, yacht clubs, charter fleets, boat and ship repair, chandleries, and marinas. Windsurfer, outrigger canoe, kayak, and stand up paddle rentals and excursions are examples of the services and activities available in Alameda as an island community; and
Whereas, the worldwide Summer Sailstice event celebrates water sports and the Encinal Yacht Club is hosting an Alameda Summer Sailstice on June 23rd that is open to the entire community and introduces non-boaters and boaters to a wide variety of sailing and other water activities.
Now, therefore be it resolved, that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim June, 2018 as
Water Sports Month
