Proclamation

Whereas, LGBTQ individuals contribute to our rich community through participation in the arts, local businesses, city government, community organizations and religious institutions; and

Whereas, Alamedans work together to reduce bullying and harassment and teach respect for everyone, regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, faith, gender, sexual orientation, or any differences, perceived or real; and

Whereas, the NEA Community Learning Center, an Alameda K-12 public charter school, takes pride in who                      you are and what you stand for, and instills in their community a more inclusive society that                      celebrates diversity, including offering of a University of California approved LGBTQ+ Studies course, celebration of Pride Month, and participation in GLSEN’s Day of Silence; thus, everyone belongs and everyone can take pride; and

Whereas, the Alameda Unified School District established the LGBTQ Round Table to foster an inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment for all students, faculty, and staff; and

Whereas, in 2015, the fundamental right to marry was guaranteed to same sex couples by the United States Supreme Court, making same sex marriage legal in all 50 states and today, same-sex couples can marry in 25 nations; and

Whereas, on June 23, 2017, in honor of the United States Supreme Court decisions of June 26, 2013 and 2015                      in favor of marriage equality, the City of Alameda hosted a free screening of the  documentary, “Citizen Change,” by film maker and Alameda resident James Chambers. In the film, Chambers interviews local LGBT activists who helped implement domestic partnerships, the world’s very first step on the road to Marriage Equality. The trailer may be viewed                      here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzvFNtg-oqI; and

Whereas, the City of Alameda believes that all community members deserve equal protection of local, state and federal laws.

Now, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim the month of June, 2018 as

LGBTQ Pride Month

in the City of Alameda, and encourage Alamedans to learn more about the history and rich contribution of LGBTQ members to the United States of America.
