Whereas, Coastal Cleanup Day recognizes the need to protect the ecological health and beauty of Alameda; and
Whereas, Alamedans take great pride in our city's natural beauty and support a clean and safe environment to live and raise our children in; and
Whereas, in years past, litter such as plastic straws, food wrappers, beverage containers, plastic utensils, cigarette filters, and smoking-related materials comprise approximately 80% of the debris found during Coastal Cleanup Day events. This plastic debris threatens water quality, public safety, and aquatic ecosystems; are a transport mechanism for toxic substances in the marine environment; ingestion of this material by animals causes malnutrition, starvation, and death; and
Whereas, recently our City, under direction of our City Council and in collaboration with our community, has been a leader in limiting single-use plastics, such as straws, take-out food containers and bags; and
Whereas, Coastal Cleanup Day is observed by communities and organizations around the world; and
Whereas, Coastal Cleanup Day is a way for all Alamedans to protect our beautiful California coastline by removing litter from beaches, shorelines, streets, parks, and neighborhoods, thereby reducing the harmful impacts caused by both litter and urban runoff, and restoring the natural beauty of the waterways; and
Whereas, the City of Alameda's Public Works and Recreation and Park Departments, Alameda County Industries, and the East Bay Regional Park District will co-sponsor Coastal Cleanup Day at several locations throughout the City including Crown Memorial State Beach, on September 15th between 8:30 a.m. and noon.
Now, therefore be it resolved that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim September 15th as
