Whereas, the Alameda City Council seeks to enhance the public welfare and safety of its residents; and

Whereas, on April 17, 2013, the Alameda City Council passed a resolution declaring that the protection against domestic violence is a fundamental human right; and

Whereas, three in ten women and one in ten men in the United States have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner; and

Whereas, in 2017, 172 domestic violence-related calls were reported to the Alameda Police Department, with calls from every neighborhood in Alameda; and

Whereas, in many cases, traumatized children are the silent victims in homes where domestic violence occurs; and

Whereas, the residents of the City of Alameda recognize that domestic violence is incompatible with healthy relationships, and that breaking the cycle of domestic violence requires a focused and coordinated community response; and

Whereas, law enforcement officials, mental health and public health professionals, non-profit agencies, and faith-based organizations help those in need; and

Whereas, the City of Alameda's Domestic Violence Task Force, comprised of Building Futures with Women and Children, the Alameda Police Department, Alameda Hospital, the City of Alameda, Family Violence Law Center, Alameda Family Services, Alameda Point Collaborative, Alameda's Social Service Human Relations Board, Girls Incorporated of the Island City, and Alameda Boys & Girls Club, coordinates domestic violence prevention and intervention services in the City of Alameda, executes outreach activities during Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and is designed to mobilize all members of our community to take a proactive role in building a domestic violence free community.
