Proclamation

Whereas, since 1994, the month of October has been dedicated to the celebration of the important role Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning people have taken in creating the social, historical, artistic, legal, and political world we live in today; and

Whereas, October marks historically significant days such as the first march on Washington for Lesbian and Gay rights in 1979 and National Coming Out Day; and

Whereas, LGBTQ History Month sends an important message to the nation's teachers, school boards, community leaders, and youth about the vital importance of recognizing and exploring the role of LGBTQ people in American history; and

Whereas, LGBTQ History Month is recognized as an important and effective means of educating and calling to action the citizens of Alameda to work together to fight prejudice and discrimination; and

Whereas, the community's knowledge and understanding of LGBTQ history better enables and supports all individuals and families in pursuit of a dignified and respectable life; and

Whereas, in 2016, the City of Alameda, the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD), the Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth, and their Families (ACCYF), the Alameda Chamber of Commerce, the Alameda Education Foundation (AEF), Alameda Family Services (AFS), the Alameda Education Association (AEA), the local California School Employees Association (CSEA) Chapters 27 and 860, the Alameda Parent Teacher Association (PTA), and other civic leaders joined together in an "Everyone Belongs Here" campaign created by AUSD students and AUSD's LGBTQ Round Table to voice a common call to action for LGBTQ rights, uniting us all in a social justice platform to uphold the rights of all people.
