Whereas, the City of Alameda recognizes that a special vibrancy exists within the entire community when individual citizens "go the extra mile" in personal effort, volunteerism, and service; and
Whereas, the City of Alameda also acknowledges the mission and spirit of Extra Mile America, and along with more than 500 cities in America, celebrates Extra Mile Day each year on November 1st; and
Whereas, the City of Alameda chooses to celebrate individuals, organizations, and businesses in our community who commit and give of themselves wholeheartedly in support of programs, services, and activities that help make Alameda a better place to live; and
Whereas, the Social Service Human Relations Board will hold its annual City of Alameda Community Service Awards, now in its fifth year, at a reception on Thursday, November 8, 2018, to honor Joanne Robinson with the Jim Franz Lifetime Achievement Award for her more than 50 years of volunteering in disaster preparedness with the Red Cross and for her over 25 years of guiding the Red Cross Youth Clubs in Alameda schools, as well as to acknowledge the Alameda Food Bank, Michael Chen, John Jacobs, Jerry Juhala, Linda Juhala, John Knox White, Jacqueline Mitchell, Kari Thompson, and the late Kent Rosenblum for their extraordinary dedication and service to our community; and
Whereas, in the spirit of "Extra Mile Day" and in support of Extra Mile America, the City of Alameda also recognizes Mark Sorensen for his immense contributions to the civic vitality and economic prosperity of Alameda by leading the Alameda Chamber of Commerce as Executive Director for over seven years, and service on the City's Social Service Human Relations Board, Alameda Family Services Board, Alameda Harvey Milk Day Celebration Committee, Alameda Sister City Association, Kiwanis Club of Alameda, Rhythmix Cultural Works Citizens Advisory Bo...
