Proclamation

Whereas, Keep America Beautiful, a nonprofit dedicated to improve and beautify community environments across the nation,  has declared November 15, 2018, as America Recycles Day in observance of the importance of recycling; and

Whereas, America Recycles Day is a day to raise awareness, educate, motivate, and encourage involvement in recycling for all 365 days of the year; and

Whereas, the Climate Action Plan that the City of Alameda adopted in 2008 and the recently updated Zero Waste Implementation Plan includes that Solid Waste Stream Diversion and Recycling has reduced the amount of landfill the City of Alameda produces; and

Whereas, the State of California currently has a recycling rate of 44%, Alameda County has a recycling rate of 48% and the City of Alameda has a 77% recycling rate. The overall national recycling rate is 34.6%; and

Whereas, the City of Alameda has long demonstrated its dedication to environmental stewardship, sustainability, and the protection of the environment and its natural resources through a diverse array of environmental programs and events; and

Whereas, many Alameda entities work towards improving our sustainability, including Community Action for a Sustainable Alameda (CASA), Alameda Public Works, Alameda Municipal Power (AMP), and our local businesses and business districts; and

Whereas, in 2017, Alameda Public Works was awarded a grant to work with Clean Water Fund to  “un-package Alameda” through the Rethink Disposable program, and reduce disposable packaging, including plastic straws and other to-go ware; and transition to washable reusables; and

Whereas, in September, 2017, Alameda City Council revised Alameda’s Disposable Food Service Ware Ordinance to reduce the number of single-use plastics generated within the City of Alameda, including require single-use plastic straws be replaced with compostable paper straws only available upon request; and

Whereas, the City and Alameda County Industries are promoting “America Recycles Day” in November through a special collection effort in support of Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter. The City of Alameda, Alameda County Industries, and local business partners are collecting gently used items for reuse to benefit companion animals who are taken care of by Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter and their volunteers.

Now, therefore be it resolved, that I, Trish Herrera Spencer, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim November 15, 2018 as

America Recycles Day 2018

in the City of Alameda and encourage all residents to join me in recognizing the contributions that our community has made in the past, and continues, to strive to keep our City green.
