Proclamation

Whereas, smoke from recent wildfires travelled hundreds of miles, making the air in Alameda dangerous to breathe. Eugene Lee took extraordinary measures to ensure our community, and especially our most vulnerable, was protected from danger by securing and donating thousands of respirator facemasks; and

Whereas,  the Camp Fire was the deadliest in our history, and given the continued and worsening impacts of climate change, devastating wildfires and the serious health impacts they cause are the new normal for our surrounding communities; and

Whereas, in early November 2018, the Air Quality Index in Alameda was unhealthy for sensitive groups, as smoke traveled from the Butte County fires into the Bay Area. In the days that followed, air quality levels unexpectedly worsened and became unhealthy for all; and

Whereas, many Alameda residents were not prepared for such hazardous conditions, and were concerned for their safety and the safety of their family, friends, and neighbors; and

Whereas, Eugene Lee, Alameda resident and owner of Western Gravel & Roofing Supply Inc., donated and secured respirator facemasks that were distributed to Alameda residents in need; and

Whereas, after distributing 2,000 masks in the early hours of the morning, the City asked Eugene for additional help. Eugene worked tirelessly to secure and deliver 4,000 masks to our community, including Alameda’s unsheltered residents; and

Whereas, Eugene Lee helped Alameda breathe, and we are ever grateful for his generosity, compassion, and kindness.

Now, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim February 5, 2019 as

Eugene Lee Day

in the City of Alameda and encourage all residents to become prepared for the next disaster, and be willing to help others when they most need it.
