Whereas, the American Red Cross, a leading voluntary agency chartered and authorized by Congress to act in times of need, provides compassionate assistance to people afflicted by personal, local or national disasters; and

Whereas, the American Red Cross Bay Area was founded in 1898, and in 2018 helped 1,828 Bay Area families with temporary housing, clothing, food, and mental health counseling during 838 local disasters; and

Whereas, volunteers are the lifeblood of the American Red Cross, and people have counted on the Red Cross and their volunteers for the information and skills they need to be safe at home, work, school and play. Last year, the American Red Cross Bay Area trained 86,843 people in lifesaving CPR, First Aid, and water safety; and

Whereas, through the Pillowcase Project and the Home Fires Campaign, 14,329 local individuals and families received fire prevention training, supplies, and/or smoke alarms; and

Whereas, the Red Cross staff deployed with the U.S. Military to provide emergency communications, counseling, financial assistance, and a caring presence to 912 local military families; and

Whereas, American Red Cross Blood Services supports Bay Area hospitals, providing them with more than 75,428 units of red cells, platelets, and plasma annually to patients in need; and

Whereas, many local organizations organize blood drives, including the Alameda Free Library. In their quarterly blood drives, the Library collected 218 units of blood in 2017. The Library's next drive is March 12, from noon to 5:00 pm, at the Main Library in the Stafford Room.

Now, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim March 2019 as American Red Cross Month in the City of Alameda and urge Alameda residents to thank the American Red Cross heroes who volunteer their time, give blood, take lifesav...
