Consider approving a resolution of support for AB31 - “The No Tampon Tax Bill”
Given the recent passage of Measure F, a 0.5 percent increase to the local sales tax, Alameda is in a position provide leadership in encouraging the State of California to join those states that recognize that menstrual health is a public health issue. In doing so, we will recognize that menstruation-related products are as much a human necessity as prescription drugs and groceries and these products should be added to the list of products exempted from sales tax in California.
In supporting the proposed resolution, Alameda will confirm its support for AB31, which would allow California to advance beyond its current regressive taxes and join the list of states that have recognized that sanitary pads and tampons are essential to a women's wellbeing; and show that the City of Alameda is committed to the rights and wellness of women, girls and others who menstruate and acknowledges that the State of California must put an end to taxation on essential menstrual health products.
