Title
Proclamation Declaring May 2019 as Alameda Bike-to-Work Day. (City Manager 2110)
Body
Proclamation
Whereas, in March 2019, the City declared that a climate emergency threatens Alameda and the world, and transportation is the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions in the City; and
Whereas, bicycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions, promotes good health, improves air quality and reduces traffic congestion; and
Whereas, Bike to Work and Bike to School Days have been shown to increase the number of bicyclists by educating residents about the health benefits of bicycling for ourselves and our planet; and
Whereas, Bike Walk Alameda, Alameda County Safe Routes to School Program, Alameda Kiwanis Club, Alameda Elks Club and Alameda Unified School District have created events on and around Bike to Work Day, including five Energizer Stations to promote fun and safe bicycling; and
Whereas, in support of bicycling to school, the sixth annual Alameda Bike Festival and Rodeo will take place on Sunday, May 19, 2019, with free family friendly educational activities, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Otis Elementary School; and
Whereas, Bike to Work Day in Alameda is part of an annual Bay Area wide event, now celebrating its 25th year, that offers activities throughout the region; and
Whereas, the City of Alameda encourages Alamedans to ride their bicycle to work, school and transit, as often as possible.
Now, therefore be it resolved, that I, Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim Thursday, May 9, 2019 as Alameda Bike to Work & School Day and invite all Alameda residents, businesses, civic groups, government agencies, and other organizations to participate.
