Whereas, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month was established in 1978 and is observed in May because of two important milestones, the arrival of Manjiro, the first Japanese citizen to settle in our country and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, using a largely Chinese labor force; and
Whereas, over 30 percent of Alameda’s population is Asian or Pacific Islander, and our island is home to Asian American influenced dining, shopping, and cultural experiences; and
Whereas, each May, Alameda celebrates the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders that enrich our history, society, and culture; and
Whereas, we also acknowledge a darker aspect of the Asian and Pacific Islander experience in America-structural discrimination, prejudice and injustice that lasted far too long; and
Whereas, Asian Pacific Americans have distinguished themselves in the arts, literature, and sports, and as leading researchers in science, medicine, and technology; dedicated teachers; innovative farmers and ranchers; and distinguished lawyers and government leaders; and
Whereas, there are more than 20 million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Each day, through their actions, they make America a more vibrant, prosperous, and secure nation.
Now, therefore be it resolved, that I, Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, Mayor of the City of Alameda, on behalf of the Alameda City Council, do hereby proclaim May 2019 as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in the City of Alameda, and I encourage all Americans to learn more about our Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage, and to celebrate this month with programs and activities.
