EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The City of Alameda (City) has over 125 centerline miles of roadway and 969 intersections, providing access and circulation to every resident and business in the City. In the Fiscal Years 2017-19 Budget, the City established an annual capital project to systematically refresh and replace pavement markings and signs to ensure that pavement markings and control signs (stop/yield) are properly maintained. Two hundred fifty-two intersections and Main Street, from Pacific Avenue to the Main Street Ferry Terminal, will be refreshed as part of this project.

BACKGROUND

Public Works staff began this program with a focus on intersections (as opposed to midblock striping) because intersections have heightened safety considerations. The pavement markings and signs at intersections help to control the right-of-way, and preserve traffic and pedestrian safety. Although intersections are the program's initial focus, midblock sections or segments of roadway will be considered for inclusion based on their condition.

Staff began condition assessment of intersection pavement markings and signs in the west end zone of the City, bounded by Monarch Street and Grand Street. One hundred eighty-three intersections within this zone were identified for restriping and/or sign replacement. All other intersections within this zone were deemed in good condition. Staff also performed condition assessment within Alameda Point and identified 69 intersections for restriping and/or sign replacement. The east end and Bay Farm Island zones will be addressed next fiscal year.
