EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

It is recommended that City Council approve a motion authorizing the City Manager, or his designee, to execute a Service Provider Agreement (Exhibit 1) with Shah Kawasaki Architects Inc. in the amount of $24,970 for a feasibility study to estimate construction costs for a new Fire Station 5 on a new site at Alameda Point.

BACKGROUND

On June 18, 2019, the City Council adopted the Fiscal Year (FY) 2019-20 and 2020-21 Budget, which included an appropriation in FY 2019-20 for a feasibility study for rehabilitation Fire Station 5 and a separate study for a new site location at Alameda Point. The feasibility study related to the possible rehabilitation of Fire Station 5 is the subject of a separate Service Provide Agreement.

The City of Alameda (City) Fire Department's Station 5, located at 950 W. Ranger Ave, is currently used as a training facility and storage for the City's Fire Department and Public Works Department. Future plans are to rebuild its use as a fire training center, staffed fire station and for storage of critical apparatus and equipment. Prior to its reuse, a feasibility study to seismically strengthen and rehabilitate the facility will need to be conducted. Staff considered and reviewed two specialized architectural firms and Shah Kawasaki Architects, Inc. was selected. Shah Kawasaki Architects Inc. is currently preparing the feasibility study for the rehabilitation of Station 5.

DISCUSSION
