Brief description of the subject to be printed on the agenda, sufficient to inform the City Council and public of the nature of the referral:

Gun violence is a serious public health crisis that continues to plague our nation with our national leaders doing little, if anything, to take steps to address this issue with common sense solutions.

Vice Mayor Knox White and Councilmember Oddie are hosting a town hall to discuss this important issue on Monday, October 14 (location TBD) from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. The town hall will hear from policy experts, state and local leaders, and our community to help shape actions Alameda can take to address this issue. Confirmed attendees as of now are State Senator Nancy Skinner, State Assemblymember Rob Bonta, and District Attorney Nancy O’Malley - all leaders in working to reduce gun violence.

This referral seeks three things, two immediate, and one longer term -

First, requests that the City Council sanction this town hall as an official city event, allowing the appropriate staff to assist is promoting and participating in the event.

Second, appoint Vice Mayor Knox White and Councilmember Oddie, who have worked on planning the town hall, as a council sub-committee to continue to organize the event.

Third, ask the subcommittee to work with policy experts, state and local leaders, and the community to develop a list of possible policy options for council discussion. Options should include policy options that can be adopted locally as well as considering taking an active role and sponsoring state and federal legislation on this issue.
