Proclamation Declaring September 21, 2019 as Coastal Cleanup Day.  (City Manager 2110)

Body

Proclamation

Whereas, Coastal Cleanup Day recognizes that we need to protect Alameda’s ecological health and beauty; and

Whereas, Alamedans take great pride in our City’s natural beauty and support a clean, safe environment now and in the future; and

Whereas, in previous years, litter, including plastic straws, food wrappers, beverage containers, plastic utensils, cigarette filters, and smoking-related materials comprised approximately 80% of the debris found during Coastal Cleanup Day events, and plastic debris transports toxic substances in the marine environment and threaten water quality, public safety, and aquatic ecosystems; and

Whereas, recently our City Council, in collaboration with the community, has become a leader in limiting single-use plastics, such as straws, take-out food containers and bags; and

Whereas, Coastal Cleanup Day, which is observed by communities and organizations around the world provides an opportunity for all Alamedans to protect our beautiful California coastline by removing litter from beaches, shorelines, streets, parks, and neighborhoods, thereby reducing the harmful impacts of both litter and urban runoff, and restoring the natural beauty of our waterways; and

Whereas, the City of Alameda’s Public Works and Recreation and Park Departments, Alameda County Industries, and East Bay Regional Park District will co-sponsor Coastal Cleanup Day at Crown Memorial State Beach on Saturday, September 21st between 8:30 a.m. and noon.

Now, therefore be it resolved, that I, Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim September 21, 2019 as Coastal Cleanup Day 2019 in the City of Alameda and invite all Alameda residents, businesses, civic groups, government agencies, and other organizations to participate.
