Whereas, the City of Alameda recognizes that a special vibrancy exists within the entire community when individual citizens "go the extra mile" in volunteerism and service; and

Whereas, the City of Alameda, along with more than 500 cities across the country, recognizes November 1st as Extra Mile Day, to celebrate the capacity we each have to create amazing and positive change within our communities; and

Whereas, Alameda celebrates individuals, organizations, and businesses who wholeheartedly support programs, services, and activities that make Alameda a better place to live, work and play; and

Whereas, on Thursday, November 7, 2019, the Social Service Human Relations Board (SSHRB) will hold its annual Alameda Community Service Awards reception at the Elks Lodge Ballroom starting at 6:30 pm, to present John McCahan with the Jim Franz Lifetime Achievement Award for his lifelong service to the community, and will also honor the Alameda Homeless Network, Faction Brewing Company, Antonio Arevalo, Cheri Corfey, Luzanne Engh, David Kiewlich, Kaia Marbin, and Mark Sorensen for their extraordinary dedication and service to our community; and

Whereas, at this reception, the City of Alameda will also present Eugene Lee with the Extra Mile Award, for his efforts to relieve the health and safety concerns of many Alameda residents during last November's devastating Northern California wildfires by providing thousands of respirator masks that were distributed to Alameda residents at a time when supplies were seriously depleted. Eugene Lee demonstrated that one person's effort to go the extra mile can serve a thousand more.
