Brief description of the subject to be printed on the agenda, sufficient to inform the City Council and public of the nature of the referral:

California Paid Family Leave (PFL) provides partial pay to employees who need to take time off from work to care for a seriously ill family member (child, parent, parent-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, spouse, or registered domestic partner) or to bond with a new child entering the family through birth, adoption or foster care placement. While the partial pay is helpful, most families rely on their full pay in order to cover the high cost of living in the Bay Area. Taking a pay cut when there is a new addition to the family or when another income-earning family member is unable to work hurts families and makes it difficult for them to fully use PFL.

State law permits employees on Paid Family Leave to use sick, vacation, or other Paid Time Off to supplement their PFL wage replacement and make them whole.
