Body
Proclamation
Whereas, on Small Business Saturday, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the City of Alameda celebrates our local small businesses and the contributions they make to our local economy and community; and
Whereas, according to the United States Small Business Administration, there are currently over 30 million small businesses in the United States representing 99.7 percent of all firms with paid employees in the United States, who were also responsible for 65 percent of net new jobs created from 2000 to 2018; and
Whereas, small businesses employ over 47 percent of the employees in the private sector in the United States; and
Whereas, 96 percent of consumers who plan to shop on Small Business Saturday said the day inspires them to visit small, independently-owned retailers and restaurants that they haven’t previously tried; and
Whereas, here in Alameda, we encourage residents to shop, eat, and enjoy locally this Small Business Saturday and every day. By shopping local we not only support our friends and neighbors, we help make our island a well-known destination.
Now, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, Mayor of the City of Alameda do hereby proclaim November 30, 2019, as Small Business Saturday and urge the residents of our community to support small businesses and merchants on this day and throughout the year.
