EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Alameda Police Department's (Department) Marine Patrol Unit has the capacity to protect and serve the critical waterfront surrounding and adjacent to the island of Alameda. In 2015, the Department's Marine Patrol Unit purchased a marine patrol boat using grant funds received from the State. That boat is now ill-equipped to handle the rougher waters that are anticipated, given the modified mission of the coalition of law enforcement agencies, which the Department's Marine Patrol Unit is a member, that patrol the waterways of the Alameda/Oakland area. This spring, the Department applied for a FEMA grant to finance a new patrol boat, and was awarded a grant in September.

The Department conducted a competitive bid process and is now prepared to recommend an award to Safe Boats International, who would supply a durable police boat that is better equipped to handle the rough waterways of the Alameda/Oakland area, in addition to meeting other objectives.

BACKGROUND

The Department purchased a patrol boat in 2015 after entering into a grant agreement with the State of California, Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW).
