Consider Adopting a Resolution Supporting the Alameda Unified School District’s “Alameda Teacher/Staff Retention” Measure or Alternatively, Direct Staff to Agendize a Resolution Supporting the Measure.

On November 12, 2019, the Alameda Unified School District Board of Education unanimously adopted a resolution placing the “Alameda Teacher/Staff Retention” measure on the ballot for the March 3, 2020 election (see attached).  The measure proposes raising $10,500,000 annually in school funding via a seven-year parcel tax to attract and retain excellent teachers and employees, sustain strong academic programs in reading, writing, math, arts/sciences, and help counselors support struggling students.

This referral requests the Council approve the attached resolution, or in the alternative, direct staff to bring back a resolution, supporting this vital measure.  In the past, the City Council has approved resolutions supporting parcel taxes and bond measures to fund critical government services provided to the residents of Alameda, including most recently:

AC Transit Parcel Tax Renewal Bond Measure (2016)

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) General Obligation Bond Measure (2016)

Alameda County Affordable Housing Bond Measure (2016)
