Whereas, the American Red Cross, was chartered in 1881 by Congress and authorized to act in times of need to provide compassionate assistance to people afflicted by personal, local or national disasters; and
Whereas, last year, the American Red Cross helped 1,563 families with temporary housing, clothing, food and mental health counseling during 824 local disasters; and
Whereas, the American Red Cross Bay Area was founded in 1898. Last year, this chapter trained 93,183 people in lifesaving CPR, First Aid and water safety, providing the information and skills they need to be safe at home, work, school and at play; and
Whereas, through the Pillowcase Project and the Home Fires Campaign, 20,629 individuals and families received fire prevention training and supplies, including smoke alarms; and
Whereas, the Red Cross staff deploy with the US Military to provide emergency communications, counseling, financial assistance, as well as a caring presence to local military families; and
Whereas, American Red Cross Blood Services support Bay Area Hospitals by providing them with thousands of units of red cells, platelets and plasma for patients in need.
Now, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim March 2020 as American Red Cross Month in the City of Alameda for their invaluable work and efforts, 365 days a year, in our community and around the country.
