Title

Discuss COVID-19 and Its Economic Development Implications for the City of Alameda; Provide Direction as Recommended

Body

Date:                     March 19, 2020

To:                      Members of the Mayor’s Economic Development Advisory Panel

From:                      Lois Butler, Economic Development Manager

BACKGROUND

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness spreading worldwide.  On March 10, City officials learned that an Alameda Firefighter tested positive for COVID-19. Protocols are being followed regarding this case. In addition, the City of Alameda is fully cooperating with County public health officials.

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and the California Department of Public Health have issued guidance for businesses, employers, and mass gatherings (see Exhibits 1 and 2).  As social distancing strategies become more commonplace, COVID-19 may have economic implications for the City of Alameda, particularly for small businesses (such as restaurants) and low-income wage earners.

DISCUSSION

The City of Alameda has shared information with the local business community about a variety of programs that may help businesses and employees with the potential economic impacts from the COVID-19 (see Exhibit 3).  This includes links to current State and local assistance programs and guidance related to COVID-19.

City staff would like to hear from the Economic Development Advisory Panel members about their perspectives of COVID-19’s local economic implications and possible recommendations for the City to consider.

RECOMMENDATION

Discuss COVID-19 and its Economic Development implications for the City of Alameda; provide direction as recommended.

Respectfully submitted,

Lois Butler, Economic Development Manager

By,

Eric Fonstein, Development Manager
